Williams & Hussey Molders: A Proud American Legacy

Williams & Hussey Molders: A Proud American Legacy

Since 1954, Williams & Hussey has been synonymous with quality and innovation in the woodworking industry. From its humble beginnings in New Hampshire to its current operations in Iowa, the company’s journey reflects a commitment to American craftsmanship.

Founding and Early Innovations

In the early 1950s, entrepreneurs Thurston Williams and Forrest Hussey founded Williams & Hussey Machine and Tool Co. in Milford, New Hampshire. The company initially focused on pumps and auto parts, but the founders soon recognized a need for portable molding machines in woodworking shops. By 1954, they introduced their first molder/planer models, including the W7 hand-feed unit. Soon after came the W7PF and W7S models, designed to meet a growing demand for precision and efficiency in custom woodworking.

Growth and Product Evolution

Throughout the 1960s and beyond, Williams & Hussey expanded its product line and reach. The acquisition of the J.G. Blount Company in the early ’60s allowed the company to explore new areas, such as industrial lathes and grinders. Still, the core focus remained on molders—machines that quickly became a staple in cabinet shops, millwork facilities, and restoration projects. Many of those early machines are still in service today, a testament to the durability and reliability that define the brand.

A New Chapter: Relocation to Iowa and a Renewed Commitment to American Manufacturing

In 2020, Allen Eden, owner of Original Saw Company, purchased Williams & Hussey from Stephen Carter following Mr. Carter’s retirement. Both men were active members and past presidents of the Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America (WMMA). This organization dedicated itself to promoting American-made woodworking equipment. Mr. Carter, a passionate supporter of domestic manufacturing, believed it was important that Williams & Hussey molders remain American-made. He trusted Original Saw Company to carry that vision forward.

After the acquisition, Williams & Hussey operations relocated from Amherst, New Hampshire, to Britt, Iowa. The move marked a new chapter for the company, aligning it with another manufacturer deeply rooted in U.S. production. Bringing Williams & Hussey under the same roof as Original Saw Company, a well-respected radial arm saw manufacturer, was a natural fit. Together, the two companies offer a complementary lineup of tools designed for professional woodworkers who value durability, performance, and American craftsmanship.

Today, Williams & Hussey proudly manufactures every molder in Britt, Iowa. Core components such as castings and sheet metal are sourced from North Iowa. The motors used in the molders are also made in the United States. Motors are made in the United States, and manufacturers in Iowa and Illinois supply variable feed motors and electrical components. This regional supply chain supports local economies and guarantees that every component meets the brand’s high standards. With expanded capabilities and a renewed focus on quality, Williams & Hussey is building machines ready to serve the next generation of woodworkers.

Commitment to American Manufacturing

Williams & Hussey’s commitment to American manufacturing goes beyond sourcing materials; it’s evident in every aspect of the business. Assembly, quality control, and shipping all take place at the Britt facility, handled by a team of skilled professionals. The company also takes pride in its people. Many employees are active in the local fire department, serve as EMTs, coach youth sports teams, or have served in the military.

All customer support is handled in-house, so when you call, you’ll speak directly with someone who knows the product and is ready to help. This personal approach, combined with a dedication to domestic production, reinforces what Williams & Hussey stands for: quality tools made by people who care right here in the USA.
