Guide 2: Molder Feed Rolls Not Moving

Molder Feed Rolls Not Moving: When the Arbor Turns but the Feed Rolls Don’t

If your molder’s arbor is spinning but the feed rolls are not moving, the issue is usually within the feed system rather than the cutter head. Use the checklist below to help narrow down the cause based on your molder type.

For Variable Feed Molders

Inspect Chains and Sprockets

Check that all chains are properly tensioned and not slipping. Confirm sprockets are aligned and securely fastened.

Check Feed Roller Axles

Make sure the roller axles are tight and not shifting out of position during operation.

Verify Voltage to the Drive Board

Use a multimeter to confirm proper voltage is reaching the drive board. A loss of power can prevent the feed system from engaging.

Feed Roll Maintenance Tip

Properly functioning feed rolls are critical for consistent feeding and profile quality. If further inspection or replacement is required, watch the video below for step-by-step instructions on safely changing feed rolls on your Williams & Hussey molder.

For general safety guidance when servicing woodworking machinery, refer to OSHA’s woodworking machinery safety guidelines.

For Constant Speed Molders

Inspect the Fiber Drive

A worn or damaged fiber drive at the end of the arbor is the most common cause of feed roll failure on constant speed machines. Inspect carefully and replace if needed.

Open and Inspect the Gearbox

Check the three internal gearbox gears for wear or damage. Stripped or broken gears will prevent feed roll movement.

Check Fuses (Older Machines)

On older machines, inspect the control panel for blown fuses that may interrupt power to the feed system.
