FAQs

We have created a list of some of the most frequently asked questions regarding molder upgrades and have posted them below.

If your Williams & Hussey Molder was manufactured before May 2006, a Multi-Pass Kit is a valuable upgrade. These kits allow your molder to take light passes up to 3/16" above the stock—ideal for cutting deep, wide, or hardwood profiles without causing chatter. The kit includes longer springs and a modified infeed swing arm to maintain pressure on the feed rolls for smoother, more consistent results.

Molders built after May 2006 already include multi-pass capabilities, so this upgrade is not needed for newer machines.

The Variable Feed Kit is an excellent upgrade for those looking to enhance the performance of a constant feed molder. It allows you to adjust the feed rate from 0 to 19 feet per minute, giving you greater control based on the material and profile you're working with.

  • Slow the feed rate for deep cuts, hardwoods, or wide profiles to reduce motor load and stress on the stock.
  • Speed it up for small profiles or light-duty passes to increase throughput.

The kit includes a new control panel, variable feed motor assembly, chains, chain cover, sprockets, and hardware. It replaces your existing control system and is compatible with older Williams & Hussey models, including the W7S, Original, 154, and 154CE molders. Available in single-phase or three-phase power, this kit is a game-changer for shops that need flexibility in their feed rates.

Conversion Kits modernize older molder models by adding the key features found in today's Williams & Hussey machines. Each kit includes the components needed to upgrade your molder to have:

  • Power in and power out feed
  • Multi-pass capabilities
  • Variable feed (0–19 feet per minute)

This Conversion Kit provides a great way to extend the life of your molder and bring it up to current performance standards without investing in a brand-new unit.

A Variable Feed Kit upgrades a constant feed molder, allowing you to control the feed rate anywhere from 0 to 19 feet per minute. This gives you flexibility when running different profiles or materials. Use slower speeds for deep cuts and hardwoods and faster speeds for lighter passes.

A Conversion Kit, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive upgrade package for older molders. It brings your machine up to current specs by adding power in and power out feed, multi-pass capability, and variable feed.

In short:

  • Variable Feed Kit = Just the feed rate control upgrade
  • Conversion Kit = Full feature upgrade for older models, which may include variable feed, multi-pass, and power feed enhancements

The sturdy stationary molder Stand is constructed from all steel and now comes standard with all new Williams & Hussey Molder purchases. In response to customer feedback, the Stand was redesigned in 2021 to be heavier for increased stability. It includes a motor lock to prevent unwanted movement during operation and features integrated controls for ease of use.

If you're converting an older molder to include the new Stand, a 45" Powertwist Belt is necessary for proper operation. In addition, upgrading this Stand is required when adding extension tables to your molder.

For added convenience, order a Mobile Base. The Mobile Base allows you to move your molder around the shop easily.

The Chip Extractor & Head Assembly is a modern upgrade to the original W&H Molder Chip Deflector. It replaces outdated cast iron and sheet metal components with a more efficient and durable Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Chip Extractor.

This assembly improves chip flow and fully covers the knife area. Chips and debris flow efficiently into your vacuum system for better dust collection. Not only does this keep your shop cleaner, but it also helps extend the life of your machine and cutting knives by minimizing wear and buildup.

Whether upgrading an older molder or simply improving your current setup, this is a must-have addition for cleaner, safer, and more efficient operation.

The Guide System GS-2 is a valuable upgrade that increases the working surface of your molder and helps protect your knives—especially when cutting profiles that go below stock thickness, such as crown bottoms, half rounds, quarter rounds, and screen molds.

Guide Systems now come standard with all new molder purchases, but they are also an excellent retrofit for older machines.

This upgrade helps ensure smoother operation, better stock guidance, and knife protection, which is especially important for precision molding work.

Most upgrade and retrofit products are compatible with a wide range of Williams & Hussey models, including older units. If you're unsure about compatibility, contact our team with your model number, and we'll help confirm what is possible.

While many of the upgrades are designed for user-friendly installation, we recommend reviewing the instruction manual included with each item. If you're not comfortable with electrical work or adjustments, professional installation is a great option.
